point of contact
April 7, 2009 4:19 PM"Use your voice to supreme effect."
That's what Mr. Purdom's feedback was regarding my inaugural speech so many months ago. Yesterday, I (finally) managed to get in contact with the SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) post in SF. I emailed the president and the secretary, left them messages on their answering machines, but since I'm on spring break, I could call during the day and got in contact with one of the vice presidents (the president's line is apparently always voicemail.)
I kinda rehearsed the conversation in my head a bit, but it's still always a little unnerving when you're trying to make an awesome first impression and the people you're talking to are adults and in the military.
I dialed the 925 number, which I think is like Walnut Creek/Orinda area and I was prepared to get another voicemail but instead I get thrown a curveball. Of course, it's a secretary. It took me all of .728 seconds to break the hesitation and ask for Brad because the voice I was talking to was definitely female. "One moment, please." Was all I had to endure before I was connected and finally got in touch with the people I emailed two weeks ago.
I guess what's on my mind is why they so naturally connected me. Not a "may I ask who's calling" or anything like that. I'm forced to believe that I sounded confident enough that it appeared that I knew Brad personally, or simply because she thought I was an adult because of my voice. It makes my head spin when I realize that I'm not a kid anymore.
